CANADA RECOGNISES FYROM AS “REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA”

The Conservative Government of Canada has decided to recognise FYROM under the name of Republic of Macedonia, a decision that has caused a great disappointment and protest amongst hundreds of thousands of Canadians of Greek heritage and their families.

The Canadian Hellenic Congress very strongly protests such a decision that is in direct violation of Resolution 817 (1993) 2 of the United Nations’ Security Council, and calls the government to withdraw it.

The timing of such a decision also raises questions, as the Governments of Greece and FYROM are engaged in diplomatic discussions towards a mutually agreeable permanent solution regarding the future name of FYROM, and its entry in the European Union and NATO.

“Canadians are accustomed to foreign policy decisions that have won it its reputation and respect in the international community and all of its citizens from coast-to-coast. This is a definite shift. This decision creates additional challenges to a traditional long standing friend to Canada such as Greece, and also to FYROM in the wake of important decisions for its future” added Mr. Manolakos, President of the Canadian Hellenic Congress.

The Canadian Hellenic Congress expressed concerns that such actions may further existing tensions between Greece and FYROM as well as between fellow Canadians and has encouraged this government in the past to maintain its traditional position.

The Canadian Hellenic Congress represents the political, social, and cultural interests of all Canadians of Hellenic heritage in Canada and in the World Council of Hellenes, a world-wide organization of the Hellenic Diaspora across five continents.
